Spending time by the water with family and friends is one of the best parts of summer. Whether you’re relaxing at the beach or cooling off in the pool, many of our favourite activities revolve around water, and it’s only natural to want to include our pets in the fun.

While bringing your furry companion along can make the day even more enjoyable, it’s important to take a few precautions to ensure everyone stays safe. Here are some practical tips to help your pet enjoy the water safely.

1. Can your pet swim?

Not all pets are natural swimmers. While some dog breeds take to water easily, others, such as bulldogs and pugs can struggle due to their body shape. If your pet is inexperienced or not built for swimming, introduce them to water gradually and supervise them closely, especially in deeper areas. Lean dogs with low body fat may also have difficulty staying buoyant.

2. Check the water conditions

Water can be more dangerous than it appears. Be mindful of rip currents, strong tides, or fast-moving water, as these can quickly put your pet at risk. After heavy rain, submerged debris like branches or sharp objects may be hidden below the surface.

Even calm-looking freshwater can carry risks, including a harmful bacteria disease called leptospirosis. Pools, while controlled, contain chemicals that can upset your pet if ingested. Staying aware of these hazards is key to preventing illness or injury.

3. Watch for dangerous wildlife

Just as marine life can pose risks to humans, pets are also vulnerable. Keep an eye out for jellyfish or eels near the water. Curious pets may approach wildlife, so supervision is essential at all times.

4. Be careful with beach “treasure”

Beaches are full of interesting smells and objects that can tempt your pet. Training your dog to respond to commands like “leave it” can help prevent them from picking up harmful items. Watch out for dangers such as fish hooks, sharp shells, or spoiled food, and monitor your pet if they do eat something unusual.

5. Plan toilet breaks

If you’re heading out on a boat, make sure your pet has had a toilet break beforehand. Plan another break as soon as you return to land to keep them comfortable and avoid accidents.

6. Practice water safety

If you’re introducing your pet to activities like kayaking or boating, it’s worth practicing beforehand. Help your pet get used to the equipment and prepare for unexpected situations, such as capsizing, so they’re less likely to panic.

7. Use a life jacket

A well-fitted pet life jacket is one of the best ways to keep your pet safe in or around water. It’s especially useful for dogs that tire easily or aren’t strong swimmers.

8. Provide shade

Pets are just as susceptible to sunburn, dehydration, and heatstroke as humans. Ensure they always have access to shade, whether it’s a natural shelter or a portable beach tent where they can rest and cool down.

9. Bring fresh drinking water

Even when surrounded by water, pets still need access to clean drinking water. Saltwater and chlorinated pool water can be harmful if consumed, so always bring fresh water to keep your pet hydrated.

10. Rinse off after swimming

After a day in the water, give your pet a thorough rinse or bath to remove salt, chlorine, bacteria, or debris from their coat and skin.

With a little preparation and awareness, you and your pet can safely enjoy everything the water has to offer. Keeping these tips in mind will help ensure a fun, stress-free experience for everyone.
